Why The Paranormal?
Sometimes people ask me why I write paranormal stories…they want to know why I enjoy creating tales about vampires and werewolves and demons and fallen angels.
When I get this question, I usually reply, “Because that’s what I love.” I love the paranormal tales. I love the intrigue of the vampire, the wildness of the werewolf, and the dark power of fallen angels. I love thinking that there is more to the world than just what meets the eye. We go beyond the norm with the paranormal stories, we think that—maybe, just maybe—there could be some magic out there, waiting to be discovered.
There are no limits in paranormal stories. Anything can happen (and usually does!). Isn’t that pretty amazing?
Do you remember when you were a kid? It was only natural to believe in magic then. To think that fairies were real, that wishing on a star would make your wish come true, and that if you hoped and dreamed for something hard enough then, well, those dreams would come true.
Unfortunately, it seems that—as we age—we lose sight of the magic in the world around us. Dreams can slip away, and we stop wishing on the stars that we see in the sky.
When I write (and read) paranormals, I can believe again. I can believe that magic exists. That it’s not foolish to close my eyes on a star filled night and make a wish. Anything is possible. Anything. And I do so love the power of belief.
I love magic.

ANGEL BETRAYED—Available 07/2012
When an angel falls, all hell breaks loose…
Sammael–call him Sam–was an angel once. An Angel of Death. But the dispassionate, watch-from-above thing just wasn’t working for him when it meant watching evil torture innocent souls day in and day out. It might have cost him his wings, but these days he gets to apply the direct method on the bad guys. Problem is, what’s making his life difficult is a bad girl…
Seline O’Shaw needs protection, and with the hounds of hell on her tail, she’s not going to quibble too hard about where she gets it. Sam’s virtue is questionable, but he’s smoking hot, massively powerful, and owes her a favor. So what if she’s getting a little case of angel lust? There are some damn deadly sins after her hide…
Prologue
Death could be kind or he could be cruel. Tonight, he felt damn cruel.
Sammael’s dark wings flapped behind him as he watched his prey. The stench of blood and sweat clung to the men. They’d fought hard and long that day. They’d killed so many—men, women, and children. Sammael had taken the souls from the broken bodies. They’d seen him coming—only those slipping from the mortal world ever saw an Angel of Death—and their eyes had filled with terror.
So many dead in such a short time. He’d watched their slaughter. Stood back while they begged and screamed.
His job was only to take the souls. He gave them peace after their suffering. He served. He didn’t question.
Until now.
There was no reason for him to be in this forest. No reason for him to watch these men. They weren’t on the list for death, not tonight anyway.
They were laughing and drinking. They didn’t sense him. No one ever did—not until it was too late.
Blood still stained their hands.
Watch and wait and take the souls when it is time. That was his job, and it was the job he’d done for centuries.
Angels didn’t feel emotion. They didn’t feel lust or love or rage.
No, angels weren’t supposed to feel. But he’d never fit into that perfect mold. Lately, he’d been feeling too much, and he just couldn’t shut off the fury.
Sammael dropped to the ground. His wings closed in behind him. To kill, to take a soul, he only needed one touch. Just one.
He smiled at the men. Some were stiffening and glancing around, as if they sensed him.
They only see when death is at hand.
Sammael reached for the first man. Death is at hand for you.

Hi, Shonna! Thanks so much for having me over today!
ReplyDeleteI agree, Cynthia. Magic is a big part of why I read paranormal. The imagination of the author, the depth of the characters, the "other" world that they live in, what more can you ask for. I love the surprises that paranormal ideas bring to stories. You never know where the author will take you. Two stories are never the same even though they are similar. For me, I can picture their world and become part of it. Thank you for sharing. :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I just wanted to say that I can't wait for Sammael's story!!!
Thank you, Tina! ;) And I am so with you--I love the "You never know where the author will take you" aspect of paranormal stories. The books are always a fun adventure! Love reading them!
DeleteHi Cynthia. Your book sounds great. I read paranormals because there are amazing characters and fascinating worlds. You never get bored with a paranormal romance.
ReplyDeleteCrystal816[at]hotmail[dot]com
Hey, Crystal! I think we should make that into a slogan: You never get bored with a paranormal romance! Love it!
DeleteYou gave the best explanation of why I love paranormal romance, So I won't try to say anything more.
ReplyDeletesugerlady@aol.com
;) Thank you, Tamara! So glad you checked out the post!
DeleteI have always loved the paranormal since I was a kid reading of greek mythology
ReplyDeleteaudie(at)wickerness(dot)com
Audra, I love Greek mythology, too! Is it wrong that I've always wanted to write a Medusa story? I think she should get a better story.
DeleteI love how you put that. What better way to escape reality than to go into another reality where anything is possible?
ReplyDeleteAnd don't we all need an escape from reality some days? I sure do!
DeleteGreat post! Love your books and CAN'T wait for Angel of Darkness!!!!
ReplyDeleteI love paranormal romance because of the endless choices within the genre, the amazingly creative authors, and the constant stimulation of my imagination! Not to mention the whole escaping reality aspect!! <3
(Your answer to the question, by the way, was awesome!!
Justducky422@aol.com
Thank you!!! So glad you enjoy my stories! I sure have a blast writing them.
DeleteWhy do I like paranormal? For the sheer difference it is from reality with a touch of reality. Does that make sense? LOL. Sometimes it's nice to have that escape of the harshness of everyday life, gives one a chance to say "Hrm if angels did exist...".. And it's about things we don't visibly see everyday.
ReplyDeleteRaonaid at gmail dot com
Makes perfect sense to me! I could go for a reality with a bit more magic.
DeleteAngels of Darkness looks so good, I love me some angels - LOL What do I love about Paranormal Romance - Everything, the escape from reality into immortalitiy where the creature can outlive and live freely amongst the humans, the power they yield and the strenght and The fact that they can have a life time of love. I love the HEA's, its a lot better reading about happy couples living happily ever after then in real life when all we hear on TV or the News is about someone getting a divorce or someone taking someones money. I'd rather read something happy like a paranormal romance then listen or read about depressing crap. Thats why I love paranormal reads. At least in these stories everyone ends up happy.

So glad you think the book looks good, thank you! And I am so with you on all the depressing news in real life. I want my HEAs!
DeleteIt's great that you are able to write about what you love. I enjoy paranormal stories because there are so many possbilities in world and character-building. A great love can be that much better when you add in a little magic, literally. I never really know what to expect and that is what fascinates me.
ReplyDeleteCambonified(at)yahoo(dot)com
Not knowing what to expect next thrills me, too! ;)
DeleteI enjoy reading paranormals for all the reasons already given, strong characters, unusual story lines and the chance to escape into a different world where anything is possible, throw in a touch of romance with a happy ending and I am hooked :D
ReplyDeleteilona
felinewyvern at googlemail dot com
I'm hooked, too, Ilona!
DeleteI enjoy paranormal stories for pleasant escapism. Their worlds and troubled lives are much different from my own. They have amazing abilities to which can tempt them to be heroes or villains.
ReplyDeleteI have not read this series yet, but I enjoyed the blurbs and the excerpt from Sam's story.
Thanks!
sophiarose1816@gmail.com
So glad you enjoyed the blurb and excerpt! Thank you!
DeleteHi Cynthia,
ReplyDeleteI enjoy all kinds of paranormal and your book is definitely on top of my list to read next. I only wish I had more hours in the day to keep up with my passion of reading and writing.
kimberly.a.shook(at)gmail(dot)com
Oh, Kimber, I feel your pain! I could some more of those hours, too!
DeleteI love and read paranormal because i want to go in a world a far away from my real one as i can get... so looking forward to visit this world
ReplyDeleteWe all need an escape from the real world sometimes!
DeleteI love paranormal stories because of the fantastic worlds, the amazing supernatural creatures, and the wonderful characters. I can visit somewhere that I could never see and be taken away to a whole new world. It's basically the same reason I love science fiction. :D
ReplyDeleteBarbed1951 at aol dot com
Love all the wonderful reasons that you've listed, Barbara!
DeleteI love paranormal, especially stories about werewolves and vampires. I love that you get to use your imagination when reading. I love to think that what if there really are these creatures out there. I love shifter stories also. I love the happily ever after of the stories also. I love the alpha male characters and the kick-ass female characters. Love Cynthia's books and would love to check out Angel of Darkness and the new book Angel Betrayed when it comes out.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway.
christinebails@yahoo.com
Wouldn't it be interesting if vampires & werewolves *were* out there? I don't know if I'd be terrified or thrilled! (And I'm so glad you enjoy my books--thank you!!)
DeleteCynthia, Thank you so much for stopping by today.
ReplyDeleteI love a good paranormal story to pull me out of my boring world and throw me into another world that is exciting where the men are HOT, sexy and maybe even a little dangerous. I enjoy a good love story but want the characters to work to get to it, not just fall in love in the first 5 pages of a book
i'm so piggy backing on your answer
DeleteWendy, I feel you on the boring world. Sometimes, the laundry and the house cleaning and the homework just need to wait! We need our escape!
DeleteI never understand to read about plain ole humans.. with no wings, fangs, hairy on one day of the month,no magical powers?
ReplyDeleteLOL, I know--what is up with that?
DeleteWhat's NOT to love about PNR? It has everything you could need. Smexy alpha men, kick butt gals, action and adventure, fantasy and so much sexy romance you need to fan yourself. :)
ReplyDeletek28dalton (at) yahoo (dot) com
I am fanning now!
DeleteI love paranormal because they are always fascinating stories to read. Also it always exciting to escape to there world instead of mine lol. Now I get to add you on my TBR because they look very interesting. Thanks for stopping by. sandracarol123@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for adding me to your TBR list!
DeleteThank you all very much for the great comments! I so enjoyed reading all the reasons why you enjoy paranormal romance. Have a fabulous weekend!
ReplyDeleteI love paranormal's because the author can go places and do things that they wouldn't be able to do in traditional real world type tales. Wolves wouldn't be shifting into men and men wouldn't be able to fly or have fangs sprout from their gums.
ReplyDeletemiztik_rose@yahoo.com
Your books sound amazing! I have several of them on my TBR list on Goodreads. It's kind of hard to explain why the paranormal genre is my favorite - I guess because it just seems more exciting. A lot of relationships in paranormal books are sort of taboo, which makes it all the better :) Thanks for the giveaway!!
