We met Lucan and Anka in the first book. They were the only mated couple and had been for 100 yrs. Anka was very demure and Lucan treated this characteristic with respect.. The war wasn't well known and Lucan didn't feel he had to worry about his mate until Mathias kidnapped and raped her. The only thing that saved her was her childhood friend, Shock, who had also called to her to be his mate. Once a man has called to a woman and she doesn't except him, that man becomes unable to be with another woman sexually. Anka chose Lucan, but once her mate bond was broken it took away all her memories of her mate. All she had was an empty feeling, so she ran to the only man she remembered which was Shock. Shock is suppose to be a double agent for the Doomsday Brethren working only with Mathrias to aid the brethren. But he's so good at it no one really knows where he stands except when it comes to Anka. He would do anything for her. In this magic world you have to have sex to generate energy . So when Anka got away from Mathrias, Shock had sex with her to heal her and once she got her memories back she was too ashamed to go back to her real mate, thinking she was now too damaged and different for him to love. When Lucan's mate bond was broken he went mad and the only person that could heal him was Anka. He nearly died until she healed him. But he allowed her to walk away.
