Paint by Blood- Emily Ryan-Davis (book 1)

There’s only one substance on earth that can create a new vampire--the blood of a Chalice, a rare individual with magic in her veins. Atlanta’s human-vampire Civility Laws demand that if a Chalice is found, she must be destroyed. Vampire Teijon Reyes allowed the mortal girl Dessa Collier to live despite the threat she posed to society. If he ever finds her again, he will kill her, personal desires be damned.
Heiress to a family tradition of ward-working, house painter Dessa Collier has spent the past twelve years pretending vampires don't exist. When a friend-enemy walks back into Dessa’s life after a decade-long absence, everything Dessa has been hiding from comes crashing down on top of her.
Thrown together on a mission to protect a city under siege, Dessa and Teijon can no longer hide from the powerful attraction that binds them...or the monsters out to destroy them.

I'm going to start off by saying I was a little confused while reading this book, probably all the way up to 45%, but don't get me wrong, I liked the book but I was confused about some of the time frame & storyline.  Living outside Atlanta, Dessa was told her whole life not to be outside after dark, she knew there was something to what her grandparents had been telling her for years. She felt things differently than other people and could actually see shadows that she called ghosts, so when she was 15 years old she did not make it home before dark one night and the shadows attacked her, biting and ripping at her skin. Before her eyes these shadows formed into people, what she didn't know was that her blood was the magic that restored them but not into humans, into vampires. Teijon was sent to find and kill Dessa because the vampire council in Atlanta did not want any new vampires made since they are hard to control and do not want to abide by the laws they have set into place.  Instead of killing Dessa, Teijon licked her wounds and killed the men he had with him. Teijon took Dessa home and for the next year she stayed in the house under lock and key.
Twelve years later a vampire sought out Dessa to help set wards against shadows and other vampires. (now this is where I was confused) This vampire has been using Dessa's best friend as a feeder for years. This friend contacted Dessa all these years later but for a different purpose, she wanted to be turned into a vampire. There are a lot of twists and turns throughout this book, I could not make out who the real bad guy was, well besides Marcus, who was working with Dessa's friend and Donovan, the vampire feeding off her.
Teijon brings Dessa into his life, even if she is not willing, he is pushing and pulling the entire time. Teijon has a lover, a male lover which is a complete shock to Dessa. I thought we were gonna have a threesome going on but unfortunately we didn't, they did have a pretty hot making out session with her in the middle of them though.  So this is book 1, I will read book 2 so I can get some answers to a few of my questions because the end kinda threw me for a loop.
