Tes Hilaire is here today to talk about the heroes she thought about in her past that are now transformed into her writing of today

So You Want to be a Hero
Who doesn’t, right? Or… at least… who doesn’t want to find one? :-D But that’s not what I’m talking about today. I’m actually referring to the old Hero’s Quest game So You Want to be a Hero. It was the first fantasy adventure game for the home PC that I ever played and most likely the start of my obsession with the “bad boy” hero. See, I always played the thief. I don’t know what it was about him that sucked me in so bad… maybe the sneaking around, maybe the devil-may-care-attitude, or maybe I just really got into the whole cloak and dagger thing. Whatever it was, that character was the start of many a creative… uh… well… um… daydreams (hey! He was tall dark and handsome too! ;-). Ehem… That is really all irrelevant. What is relevant is how playing those games tended to get me in trouble. My mother would roll her eyes and say I was “spending too much time on the computer” and my teacher claimed that I was “not paying attention” when I fell into said daydreams. Truth is that back then my obsession with the game was a bit of a waste of time. Winning the game certainly never gained me anything in the real world setting and those, uh, daydreams never made it to any sort of notebook, pad of paper, or even word file where I might have proof of my creative energies. The good news is that if you were to look back at it now, you’d see that all that wasted time really wasn’t a complete loss.

If you look at the heroes that come to life in my writing, I think you’ll see that much of their core character makeup stem from these early adventures into fantasy land. Take Roland from Deliver Me from Darkness. Here you have the quintessential “bad” hero. An earthbound angel turned vampire at what he thinks is the cost of his soul. Roland is sure that he has fallen from grace and has the dark cravings—lust, both sexual and of the type A, B, AB, and O variety—to prove it. And because of this, he is far from the perfect man that he believes he should be. Only, he still has these nagging characteristics like loyalty and honor. And it’s these that power his last craving: Redemption. Who would have thought that he would find it in a pint sized human woman that tweaked every one of his cravings…

Make love to me…

Roland trembled. His body sung even as his heart howled. She’d said them, the words he’d been longing to hear since the moment she’d opened those big brown eyes. Yet it was a hollow victory given he could never be enough for her.

She was his mate. But he dared not take her. He knew if he did, it would be at the cost of his control. Eighty-nine years he’d managed to hold onto the pulsing needs of his dark nature. By just being near her he felt that thin thread of control fraying. He dared not risk it snapping.

She was his mate. But he could never allow her to bind herself to him. She owned his heart and his body, but she deserved his soul as well. And of that he had none to give.

She was his mate. He had nothing to offer, except to love her, protect her, and…

“Come,” he said, tugging her gently toward the door. His body was raging with the need to pull her closer, to tear her jeans from her, to toss her up on the granite counter by the sink and plunge into her moist heat. But even if he were able to give into his body’s needs, that would not be the way or the place to take her. Not for her first time. His Karissa deserved more: wining and dining, flowers and silken sheets. He had none of those but the sheets. Hopefully they would do...

Tes Hilaire’s idea of the perfect escape would no longer include a bout in PC fantasy land but to her porch on a sultry summer night with a good glass of rich, red wine, and a book about darkness, passion, torture and love. Her first novel in the Paladin warriors series Deliver Me from Darkness is available now. The next, Deliver Me from Temptation, releases in December. For more, visit www.TesHilaire.com.

  7. Hey all! Thanks so much for stopping in. I know a couple of you have read DMFD and hope the rest of you get a chance too soon ;-)

Sienny - you and me both! I'm counting down the weeks to December 1st!

LT- those covers are hot, aren't they... or did you mean the make-me-blush scene ;-)

Anna - I loved that game... but I also have a feeling that going back and playing it now would be a real disappointment. It's amazing how far gaming has come in such a short time! I watch my monsters play x-box and I'm like, WOW... it looks so real!
