Join us today as Karin Tabke talks about her feelings on writing sexy romance, and which side of the fence she walks on.

Boundaries Abound—Or Used To

Before I get to my post, I want to say thank you to Shonna for inviting me to hang out today!  She’s been very patient with me, and I appreciate that!
So, if someone had told me ten years ago that I’d be writing lycan erotic romance and loving it, I would have looked over my shoulder and said, “Who are you talking to?”
At the time, I was a straight romantic suspense girl.  It’s what I loved to read and write (aside from medieval historicals).  I not only was not interested in shifters or vampires at the time, but paranormal was so outside the box it was a word you didn’t say, much less write.  However, steamy romances were just beginning to ‘come out’ so to speak and that was good for me.
I naturally write steamy, so ripping the bedroom door off by the hinges was no big deal for me as a writer.  However, there are some scenes in the Blood Moon Rising trilogy that made me blush!  And I don’t blush easily.  Book one, BLOOD LAW started the trend.  Book two, BLOODRIGHT, started a whole ‘nother trend, and book three, BLOOD VOW (releasing Dec 4th) blew the doors, windows and roof off any lingering inhibitions I as a writer may have had.
By the time I turned in BLOODRIGHT, I stopped looking over my shoulder to see who was shaking their head in disappointment at what I was writing. I was good with it and that was all that mattered.  More importantly, it was in character for my characters.  There was nothing gratuitous about what I wrote.  There was no, I have to shock readers or I have to make this so sexy everyone will be talking about it! ploy.  Nope, my protagonists, Rafaela, Falon and Lucien did just fine shocking their storyteller all by themselves, and that was good enough for me.
Truth of the matter is: I enjoyed writing those scenes.  Once I crossed not only my own self-imposed boundaries, but those that society has erected, I felt emancipated as a writer.  And as a woman.
Here’s the facts as they pertain to me:  writing sexy books is fun.  Reading them is fun.  Talking about them is fun.  Reading and writing sexy books hurts no one.  It’s a private affair that we enter into by choice, not because we are forced to do so but simply because we want/need/must! escape for a little while before we have to return to the reality of life.  It’s one of the things I love most about writing romance.  It carries me away into a fantasy world where I have complete control.  I know that no matter what I throw in front of, on top of or behind my protagonists, they are going to make it.  Together, because they fell in love and fought to stay in love.  Happily Ever Afters are great therapy.  When I read the end of a story with an HEA or walk out of a movie theater with a big smile on my face because all’s well that ends well, my endorphins are riding high.  I feel good.  I’m happy, and inspired.
At the end of the day, smiling takes less effort and feels much better than frowning.  Feeling good feels better than feeling lousy.  Romance always makes me feel good, and because it makes me feel good, I will always write love stories and never stop reading them.
What about you?  The steamier the better? Or do you like the bedroom door to close and imagine what’s going on behind it?  I have a signed copy of BLOOD LAW, book one in the Blood Moon Rising trilogy, for a randomly selected commenter!

For all eternity, only one thing shall separate them—until the Blood Law is avenged…
The coming of the Blood Moon will lead two Lycan packs into war, spur two rival brothers into conflict, and spark an act of vengeance so evil that its effects will be felt for generations.
One woman stands at the center of it all…As undisputed Alpha, Rafael must choose a life mate to preserve the dominance of his Lycan pack. He never suspected, his mate would be a human, the same wounded, girl-woman he seduces from the brink of death. Falon is a dangerous combination of Lycan and Slayer—beings bred to destroy his kind. Even more, she’s a mesmerizing beauty whose sensuality tempts the seasoned warrior to take unnecessary risks. The primal heat between them is irresistible, yet surrendering to it could destroy them both…for a vengeful foe stands ready in the shadows to fulfill what is rightfully his by Blood Law.

For a long time, controlled chaos ruled Karin’s life. Busy mother of four, owner of her own successful business and wife to a street cop, she harbored thoughts of twisting plots and hot romantic scenes. Now, with only one child left at home and hubby retired from law enforcement, Karin happily pounds out those steamy scenes at her keyboard.Still semi-distracted by her adult children (Yay! no more phone calls from the high school!) and her husband now a successful football coach (Yay! No more worrying when he’s out on the street!), Karin turns out stories about hot cops, bold knights, bad boy werewolves, and the women who bring them to their knees.A full-time writer, Karin draws on a lifetime of stories and backdrops that few outside of the law enforcement community ever see, let alone hear about. Controlled chaos now reins supreme through the pages she writes where hot heroes serve, protect, and pleasure from page one to The End.

Their shared blood will destroy them in hatred–or unite them in passion…
After years of waiting, Lycan Alpha Lucien Mondragon is poised to take revenge on his brother, Rafael, by killing Rafael’s life mate, the Lycan/Slayer half-breed Falon—but he cannot complete the kill. Instead of ending her life, Lucien defiantly marks Falon as his own.
Though terrified by the savage Lucien, Falon finds herself drawn to him. Torn between the love she has for Rafael and the hunger she holds for Lucien, the will of Falon’s heart will lead her to her destined life mate–but it may also doom the brothers and the
Lycan race to extinction…
