Join us today with LYNNE STEVIE, author of ANGEL'S KISS as she talks about genre.

Genre?

“What genre is Angel’s Kiss?”  The nice lady asks.

Nothing makes me squirm more that those 5 words. “Umm, fiction?”  I answer.

“No,” She looks at me like I’m an idiot.  “I mean is it a paranormal, a thriller, a murder mystery or a fantasy novel?”

“Yes. All the above.”

Wikipedia says that genre “is the term for any category of literature or other forms of art or entertainment, e.g. music, whether written or spoken, audial or visual, based on some set of stylistic criteria. Genres are formed by conventions that change over time as new genres are invented and the use of old ones are discontinued. Often, works fit into multiple genres by way of borrowing and recombining these conventions.”

Sounds simple right?  But I’ve never been very good at all or nothing categories.  I remember growing up in the late 70’s and people either liked Disco or Rock.  It was a big deal back then and I just didn’t understand why I couldn’t like both Donna Summer and AC/DC.  So for this article I have been doing a lot of research on some of my favorite authors and every website I check has them under different categories. It’s very confusing even to those of us in the business so I know it’s confusing to everyone.  One of my fans said it best when she wrote: “Lynne Stevie has managed to encompass murder, mystery and intrigue with a paranormal bent all the way to the end, that will keep you breathless and wanting more.”   So, back to the original question, what is Angel’s Kiss?

How does a writer classify their novel?  Out of all the articles on Genre that I have reviewed two stand out in my mind.  The first one is Rachelle Gardner’s blog http://www.rachellegardner.com/2012/04/identify-your-novels-genre/ and the other is Sarah LaPolla’s blog http://bigglasscases.blogspot.com/search?q=genre.  Both ladies are literary agents and both have great advice for authors.  Basically, no matter how hard we fight against it we must learn to classify our art for business purposes.  How can we sell our novels if we can’t find the right audience?  After extensive research I have come to a decision.

Angel’s Kiss is a… (I want to make up my own category, “mystparathrillermance”.  Okay, okay, I know I have to decide.)…Adult Paranormal Thriller.  As the song goes, “That’s my story and I am sticking with it.” Check out the blogs listed above for more information on Genre and if you’ve already read Angel’s Kiss and have a better label for it, please let me know.

Happy Reading and Writing
Lynne Stevie

Angel’s Kiss is the story of Alexandria Hayes-Lewis.  Lexie, as she likes to be called, is blessed with the perfect life. By day she manages her family’s detective agency in Serevan, the beautiful beach town where she was born and raised. By night she makes certain her devilishly handsome husband knows just how much she loves him.
Lexie never knew she’d been marked at birth by an Angel's Kiss—until one ordinary case turned deadly.
A brutal attack awakens a deeply hidden family legacy: a superhuman strength and vitality. Not only is she stronger—her gift can intensify the strength and power of immortal beings. With the secrets of her heritage unlocked, and her legacy revealed, Lexie becomes the prey.
Terrified by changes she doesn’t understand and sensual nightmares she can’t control, Lexie desperately searches for ways to harness the power flowing through her veins. But when people die and her family is threatened, she takes the ultimate step against those who want to shield her, those who want to possess her, and those who want to kill her. In a frantic bid for freedom, she enlists the help of an unusual guardian and an ancient weapon.
Will it be enough to save her?

 Bio:
I was raised on a small farm in the Midwest, at a time when there were only 3 television stations.  Oh the horror!
Growing up miles away from any other families gave me the opportunity to hone my imagination and plenty of time to read.  To say that I had an active imagination is a huge understatement and I have always had a fascination for magic, fantasy and the paranormal.
After earning a bachelor degree in Criminology I married my college sweetheart and traded farm country for the sugar white beaches of the Florida Panhandle.  Now I spend my time writing and taking care of my three children, two dogs, one guinea pig and my terrific husband.
