DESK—CLEAN VERSUS CREATIVE

I've heard a lot of authors say all it would take to make them happy is a space to call their own for writing. Could be as simple as a closet with no door and just enough room to tuck a table, chair and computer inside. Maybe a corner in the house where no one would notice them working or ask what's for dinner. Or an hour or two to just take their laptop to the nearest restaurant, walk to the last booth in the row, sit facing the back wall and write, write, write.
In my case, I'm lucky enough to have an office with a big desk, a comfy chair and a 22-inch monitor (which really makes edit-time much easier on the eyes). There are even two large windows with arches. These I especially like when I'm stumped and want nothing more than to watch the fluffy flakes of snow falling in the winter or the sunshine calling to me in the summer. And of course there are bookshelves with books—lots and lots and lots of books!
Then there are the doodads and knickknacks and tchotchkes to make up the room's atmosphere. Some came from vacations through the years, holding onto memories of fun times. Others have a special tug-at-my-heartstrings place in my life from family and friends, near and far, here and gone. Others are things I can't even remember buying, but I certainly don't want to part with...at least not yet. Ahhhhh, yes, I have an office. A place to write. A place to think. A place...
Well, there is one thing I don't have—a clean desk!
Sure I have a container full of colorful paperclips, another with note pads and another for pens, markers and whatever else I need to shove in there on a moment's notice. But once I've written on the note it's stacked on a corner of the desk. My pages of plotting, research and critique group suggestion are shoved in various shades of folders and scattered in another area. And once books, business cards, fun pages I printed to read (and somehow never get read) have left my hands to litter the desk, they all find their own space among the clutter fighting to be on top of the pile.
Sure there may be dust on the vacant spots on my desk, but that can be cleaned as soon as the next chapter is finished. The stacked notes may have inched under the monitor stand, but they will find their way to the trash after one more look to make sure they've served their purpose. And the folders that empty sooner or later, well why put them away when I'll need them again tomorrow?
But I know where everything is. I know which stack to look in for Monday's meeting, Tuesday's blog, Wednesday's get-together, etc. etc. Not possible you say. Okay, I must admit there might be the occasional hour-long-search for my cell phone, but I can always call myself from the landline. Don't laugh, you may need to do the same thing sometime. By the way consider yourself lucky if the phone isn't on mute.
So you see, in my way of thinking, there's no way I could ever complete a manuscript if neatness was a prerequisite. Just wouldn't happen! I learned long ago that structure doesn't fit my creativity. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
