Q&A and Giveaway with Bridget Blackwood

Hi Bridget, so glad you could be here today. Let’s get started with our questions.

1. Tell our followers about the World in Shadows Series?

World in Shadows is about non-humans being forced into the spotlight. All of them have families, social hierarchies, and lives they were living, but now the game is changing. I think so many books today with similar stories focus on the human adjustment. World in Shadows is the opposite.

2. What was the inspiration behind this?

In my mind, I saw Rachel discovering she had these new abilities and the truth about werewolves. I felt compelled to write it and explore what happens next.

3. You say your characters are very bossy, do they ever let you get your way as to how the story is developing?

Ha ha! Rarely. I can think of several scenes I stopped typing and asked, “Really?! Why would you do that?” and the reply was always “Because I did, deal with it.” I’m just the scribe, they tell the story.

4. The heroine of Rising Shadows, Rachel Ryan,...does she carry characteristics that remind you of yourself or someone you know? Or do you try to steer clear of doing this entirely?

Besides being a smart mouth, I’d say Rachel and I are very different. I don’t try to base the characters off anyone but you can’t help but be influenced. That’s how you know particular mannerisms and attitudes fit together. I never copy a whole person though.

5. Do you ever get writer’s block, and if so, how do you get beyond it?
Gah! Often. I write out of order at first to keep my muse going. Just scenes that I piece together later. If I am totally blocked I pick a scene and start asking what would logically happen next. I go through that until I hit on something interesting. If all else fails, I go to pinterest and look at pretty pictures. LOL!

6. What is a typical writing day for you?
I have three kids, two of them are homeschooled and one is too young. They are always around making it hard to write. I wait for nap time and then I crank up the music on my headphones. I’ll write until the baby wakes up.

7. We understand you like crazy hair colors, what is the craziest color you have worn in your hair?

Oooh, that’s a good question. Probably the fire ombre. It was a gradient of reds, oranges, and yellows that reminded me of a sunset.

8. What do you like the most and the least about being an author?
Most would be the feeling of accomplishment when a book is published. Least is the editing process. My editor is tough, before all is said and done she’s had me go back so many times I get sick of reading it. It’s worth it to give the reader a polished story.

9. Can you tell us about the next installment for your series, A Scarlet Fury?
A Scarlet Fury starts almost a year after the events in Rising Shadows. The main characters are Madalaina and Cleary, who you met in book one as secondary characters. There’s more in depth explanations for what occurred in Rising Shadows and how those events rippled through the community, human and non-human alike.

10. Tell us:
your favorite movie – Aliens.
your favorite drink – Wallaby Darned.
your favorite author – Laurann Dohner, at the moment.
your favorite music – Hard Rock
your favorite thing to do with your family – Watch scary movies with the hubs and cartoons with the kidlets.
