Graveyard Shift by Jenn Burke
Series: Not Dead Yet #3
Release Date: November 4, 2019
Subgenre: LGBTQ+ Paranormal Romance
Synopsis for Graveyard Shift:
Ghost/god Wes Cooper and his not-life partner, vampire Hudson Rojas, have settled into cohabitation in an upscale part of Toronto. So what if their hoity-toity new neighbors haven’t exactly rolled out the welcome mat for the paranormal pair? Their PI business is booming, and when a suspect they’ve been tailing winds up in the morgue, it’s alongside a rash of other shifters in apparent drug-related fatalities.
Now Wes and Hudson must connect the dots between the shifter deaths and an uptick in brutal vampire attacks across the city. Throw in a surprise visit from Hudson’s niece—who may or may not be on the run from European paranormal police (who may or may not exist)—and guardianship of a teen shifter who might be the key to solving the whole mystery (if only she could recover her memory), and Wes and Hudson have never been busier…or happier.
But when a nightmare from Hudson’s past comes back to haunt him, their weird, little found family is pushed to the brink. Mucking this up would mean Hudson and Wes missing their second chance at happily-forever-afterlife…

Kat hustled us into a private meeting room. One black tuft of her cute pixie cut pointed upward instead of being nice and smooth, which matched the slightly rattled expression she turned on us. Katrina Li was a phenomenal cop, someone I respected greatly—and not only because she knew how to get shit done. We’d pulled her into the paranormal world about a year before, and even though she hated knowing about vampires and ghosts and demons and everything else, she still powered through to find the truth…even if she couldn’t always share it.
“Spill,” she ordered.
I didn’t pretend to not understand her. “They’re shifters.”
Her eyes darted between myself and Hudson. “Meaning…?”
I needed to get Kat a copy of Lexi’s paranormal textbooks. “They can change forms. Shift. Like werewolves.”
“You’re fucking kidding me.”
“No.”
“Werewolves are real?” Her voice hit a high pitch and I was glad she’d closed the door behind her.
“They’re not werewolves. Werewolves don’t exist,” Hudson assured her. “Shifters can shift into anything.”
“Jesus Christ. That does not make it better, Rojas.” She braced both hands on the conference table we were standing around and leaned hard on it. “Werewolves that aren’t werewolves. Jesus Christ.”
“Shifters are magical creatures who have a human form and an animal form their clan—family—chooses to use. Isabel’s family chose to be foxes, but they could have chosen wolves, hawks, bears…whatever animal their ancestors decided suited them best.”
“And then that’s it? They’re locked in?”
“No, I’m pretty sure they could shift into something else too…their chosen animal is, like, their favorite suit.” I grimaced at the description even before Kat shook her head.
“Favorite suit. Good Christ, I should have moved. As soon as I knew about this shit, I should have seen if the RCMP wanted me,” she muttered.
Review:
I love this series and this was by far my favorite of the three. I will admit every now and then I wanted to thump poor Wes in the head. I don't want this series to end, I love the whole paranormal romance going on with Wes and Hudson, these two have really taken the long road to get to where they are.
I was completely gutted during some parts, way to make me cry Ms. Burke. While Hudson and Wes grow more as a couple, the rest of the Scooby Gang are along for the wild adventures that Wes finds himself in.
